I feel my Parade house finally turned the corner today. The front elevation was still unfinished and hard to see until today. We installed the 8 columns out front and planted 3 trees. I'm looking forward to painting the brick and installing the metal roof. The guys are busy installing the cabinets and trim on the inside. Stay tuned.

No, we are going to paint the brick a light gray, stain the cedar brick pocket dark, and paint the masonite fascia white. I agree it does look pretty bad right now, but the guys finished the last brick on Friday. We will be sheetrocking Monday!! Way ahead of schedule.

Wow, it has been an awesome last 2 weeks at the Parade. Chad Tarver and his guys started framing this house on December 14th and yesterday they completed the outside (8 days of work). This house is the most difficult house I have built to date because of all of the engineering and trusses that went into making this house WIDE OPEN. When you walk in the front door there are no walls anywhere in the living, kitchen and dining. Chad and his guys busted it out and got it done. The roof decking is almost complete and then I will have it dried in. Chad will do a good amount of interior wood work this coming week. Stop by and take a look. The park is looking good too. If it snows, I know where I will take my daughter sledding.

I took this picture this week from another street that is adjacent to Norfolk. I was driving on my way out of Orchard Park and looked back and could see my house. It was neat to see it from a different view. The trim and cabinets are complete and the exterior has been painted. Monday we should start work on the retaining wall in front so we can get to work on the exterior.

We broke ground yesterday on my parade home by trenching the basement walls. This basement is going to be 25'x 20'. We passed inspection and will be pouring the concrete walls today. This parade location is West of Iola on 89th Street. The best way to get there is to go West off Frankford on 92nd Street and take your first right after you pass Iola. Four houses have started out of 9 so far.

My framers made awesome progress this week on Norfolk. There were always 10-12 men on the job all week working hard. These guys got after it and had some good weather to work with. This is a great floor plan with super high ceilings and large bedrooms. Stop by this week and walk around.

I used two engineered trusses from North Texas Truss for the porch and garage. These trusses were designed just for this house to achieve the long spans in the garage and covered porch.

The power was turned on today and we were able to see the kitchen lit up. There is a 12' ceiling in the kitchen so I decided to add more cabinets on top of the regular height cabinets. David installed lights inside and Glenn will put the glass in them soon. This house is nearing completion. I started digging the basement in late April. We have made good time, completing it in less than 6 months.

Yesterday I was lucky enough to obtain a lot in the 2011 Parade of Homes in The Trails at Regal Park. This neighborhood will be located West of Iola on 90th Street. It is going to be a fantastic location for the premier location of the 2011 Parade. There will be some great homes built around a circular park and walking trail. I am working on plans already; hard to believe for a house that is 1 year away from being done. My lot faces West and is on a corner. I can't wait to get started on this house in October.

This house was roofed and the HVAC was roughed in this week. The roof was left off around the chimney area because we are going to install a stucco chimney. It gets a little messy up there while they are doing it. This picture also shows the huge side patio and yard that will be on the side of the house rather than a back yard. The home owner will be able to access the covered patio from three different doors within the house.
Next up: It will take 2 days next week to rough in the electrical and we will be sheetrocking shortly after that.

Plans are being worked on for 10711 Norfolk Avenue. This home will be 3,000SF and will include, 3 bedrooms, 2.5 baths, basement and 3 car garage. This house will be a hybrid of a garden home and a traditional house being that it will only have a side yard but windows will be on both sides of the house. Turn North on Norfolk off 109th Street and you will see the location. It will have a great view and will be in the heart of Orchard Park. I should get going in mid July with the trenching of the basement.

Some people have asked me how long it takes to frame a house this size(3450 SF). I have a great framing crew that got this house totally complete in 12 days. Keep in mind there was an average of 10 men on this house everyday except Memorial Day and Sundays. These guys work extremely hard even in the 100 degree heat. The house is dried-in with Titanium and ready for plumbing and electrical rough-in next week. Go by and take a look this weekend if you get a chance.

Perspective

Last week I was having a particularly aggravating day with petty problems and other events. My wife called and asked me to pick up two pizzas from Pizza Hut on the way home because we were having some friends over for supper. I walked in to Pizza Hut and sat down to wait a bit while the pizzas were still cooking. A couple minutes later a man in a motorized scooter came in the store; picked up his pizzas, paid for them, got drinks out of the cooler, and later headed towards the exit. When he started to pass by me I said, "how ya doin' sir?" in a typical Lubbock way. He stopped his scooter, looked up at me and said, "I'm having a GREAT day." The man exclaimed these five words in the most sincerest way I have ever heard them said. He genuinely meant it and I could tell he never made excuses or sulked about his way of life.

As he left the store I realized we are dealt problems and trials in life, but I quickly learned that day how to really put them into perspective.

Last week at the home builders monthly luncheon, I opened the lunch with a prayer and led everyone in the pledge of allegiance. I was a little nervous but when Carl Russell (WTHBA President) called my name to come to the podium I quickly forgot about being nervous. I thanked God for just the opportunity to get up everyday and go to work. I sometimes forget what a blessing it is just to be able to physically get outside and be active!! I always flash back to a classroom at Cooper Elementary (circa 1985 to be exact) when I say the pledge aloud.

Its not all work, we will be taking some time off too:
Late March : Taking Ava to Ft. Worth zoo and to see Metromess family.
May: El Dorado Maroma Mexico- Short 3 day weekend trip from my wife. She surprised me on my birthday
June: Seattle for Meredith's wedding
September: Possible Turks and Caicos trip w/ Ava???????

What do you do? Who are you?

This week I was introduced to a person and he immediately asked me , "What do you do?" I replied, "I am a home builder." The conversation proceeded on and we later parted ways. As I drove home I got to thinking more about that conversation. It is very common and easy today to identify ourselves by our occupation only. So I pondered the question more, "Who am I?" Putting my occupation aside, I quickly realized I am 100+ people all in one: A husband, dad, brother, son, best friend, cousin, Texas Tech Alum, Lubbockite, son-in-law, step-son, grandson, brother-in-law, nephew, church usher, West Texan, basketball referee(for 1st and 2nd graders), client, board member, etc, etc.... So the next time somebody asks you, "What do you do?", take time to realize just really WHO you are. Have a great week.

Hwy 84 Wind Mills

This past weekend I got the chance to fly to Dallas and visit some of my family. On the drive home I couldnt believe the amount of windmills that have gone up on Hwy 84. These things are gigantic and fun to see. I have heard that the motor that the wings attach to is as big as a suburban!

On Sunday, I flew out to Dallas with a friend to go to the Cowboy game at the new stadium. The stadium is just AWESOME and a sight to behold. Its hard to believe that something like this can be man made. Its just that BIG and nice. The video screen is as wide as the length of two basketball courts. More Vandalism and Theft

Today was a great day in Orchard Park. I was greeted with over $3,500 worth of vandalism and theft. All my doors were locked, but nothing can stop the force of a big boot kicking in a door. Tis' the Season to be Stealing!!!! It's a wonderful world out there.

Remembering Lester Newman Jr.

On Wednesday night I returned to my old high school cafeteria to make a presentation to the Coronado High School Basketball program. During the summer of 2008, we lost a member of the 1998 varsity basketball team that I played on. Lester Newman was our starting point guard that year and a dear friend of all of ours long after our high school days. He was killed in a car/pedestrian accident. All of us from the 1998 team got together and presented two plaques and a donation in Lester's name to the booster club. Lester's parents and our coach, Barry Voss, were able to attend the event as well. It was a great evening in honor of Lester and the legacy he left Coronado High School. After the dinner, we walked down to the locker rooms and gym with Lester's parents to show them where the plaques would be mounted. It was definitely a walk down memory lane.

Christmas Lights

Since the weather has been so nice, I took the time this weekend to put up our Christmas lights. For some reason I enjoy doing this. I always try to reflect on what was going on the year before every time I do this activity. I have a handy roof map that shows the location of all the strands, so it makes life easy every year.
Attn: OSHA, I am tied off to the chimney, you just cant see the harness and line behind me.
